I have now finished all the course work for my Master of Information Management and am awaiting my official graduation. I am all bright eyed and bushy-tailed looking for my place in GLAMR sector. GLAMR is an acronym for ‘Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums and Records’, the sector of information technology that represents information professionals who work in various cultural institutions providing access to information and resources.
While seeking my place in the GLAMR sector, I am volunteering which allows me to give back to the community and also provides an avenue to improve my professional skills. I currently have two volunteer roles, Volunteer Collections Assistant at Parramatta Heritage Centre and Social Media Coordinator for ALIA Students and New Graduates.
I highly recommend volunteering, especially if you are a student or new graduate. You not only learn new skills and discover areas of interest for your career, but you also put all your learning into practice which is invaluable; and lets not forget how valuable your new professional connections will be when you are applying for jobs and seeking references! Above all, it makes you feel like you are making a difference in the world, giving back and helping others.
I am planing on using this blog to record skills that I learn in my volunteer roles, new areas of interest that I discover and want to explore as well as sharing tips and resources.
It’s a time to explore, imagine and discover. As Bilbo Baggins said – I’m going on an adventure!
